Screenleap Screenshots: The Fastest Way To Take, Mark Up, And Share Screenshots

We launched our all-in-one browser extension last month that allows you to take screenshots and to screen share your browser window from one tool. This month, we would like to delve deeper into the screenshots feature.

Screenshots is the easiest way to take screenshots of web pages, mark them up, and share them with others. Even though we are big fans of screen sharing, we realize that it might not always be the best way to share the contents of your screen. For interactions where immediate feedback is not necessary, you can now use Screenshots to easily take screenshots and share them with others.

Take And Share Screenshots With Fewer Steps

At Screenleap, we love to remove unnecessary steps from processes. Having tackled screen sharing, we also wanted to streamline the process of taking and sharing screenshots. Despite being something that people do frequently, taking and sharing screenshots today still requires far too many steps:

  1. Take a screenshot using a utility found on your computer.
  2. Save the screenshot to your hard drive.
  3. Find the screenshot on your computer.
  4. Open the screenshot in a image-editing tool.
  5. Mark up the screenshot.
  6. Save the screenshot back to your hard drive.
  7. Attach the screenshot to an email.
  8. Send the email to the other person.

That’s a lot of steps—especially if you have to do it more than once. Using Screenshots, you can do the above in fewer steps using a single tool:

  1. Take a screenshot.
  2. Mark it up using the built-in editor.
  3. Share it via email, Facebook, Twitter, or to your Screenleap public/group feed.

Share Publicly Or With A Group

A feature of Screenshots that distinguishes it from other screen capture tools is our support for public and group sharing. When you take screenshots, they are automatically saved to your personal feed, which only you can access.

You can publish the screenshots that you want to share to a public feed that anyone can access or to a group feed that only people you invite can access. You can use group feeds to share information with your team, perform group research, get design feedback, and to report bugs.

Install Screenshots

Screenshots is available as a browser extension on Chrome and Firefox. We will be releasing a Safari version as soon as a Safari bug is fixed by Apple. You can install the extension by going to the Screenshots installation page. Once installed, you will be able to quickly take and share screenshots of web pages without leaving your browser. There’s no need to remember keyboard shortcuts or launch a separate screen capture app.

Screenleap Launches All-In-One Browser Extension For Browser Sharing And Screen Capture

We are excited to finally launch our all-in-one utility for:
a) sharing your browser window with other people (Java not required!) and
b) taking screenshots of your browser window and sharing them with others.

The utility is available as a single extension that takes seconds to install.

Browser Sharing

Browser sharing is like screen sharing except only the contents of your web browser are shared. If you have a website or web-based application that you need to demo, sell, or support, you will find that our browser sharing feature is both the easiest way to share your browser windows with others and the easiest way for other people to share their browser windows with you.

Browser sharing is especially useful for customer support as it does not require installing Java or any other third-party software. In addition, unlike co-browsing products, you do not have to embed any additional JavaScript code into your site for browser sharing to work. Your users simply need to install the Screenleap extension from a link on your site and they will be able to share their screen with you immediately. Best of all, they don’t even need to restart their browser, so they won’t lose their place on your site.

Our browser sharing extension works on Chromebook, so Chromebook users now have a third option for sharing their screens. Unlike the two existing options, Screenleap’s browser sharing feature does not require your viewers to use a specific browser (Chrome Remote Desktop), install a plugin (Chrome Remote Desktop), or sign up for any account (Google Hangouts).

Screenleap Launches Integrated Audio Conference Calling

We are excited to announce the launch of our new integrated audio conference calling solution for you to use while sharing your screen. Using our solution, you can now discuss what you are sharing with your viewers without having to use a separate service.

To use audio conferencing, simply click the Show instructions link underneath the Audio conferencing heading that is shown when your screen is shared. You will be shown a phone number along with a 7-digit access code. To start a conference call, simply call the number listed and enter your 7-digit code followed by the * button. Conference call hosts can access additional commands during their calls. Please take a look at the FAQ for a complete list of available host commands.

You can share your the conference call information with your viewers by clicking the Show audio conference information to viewers button. If you do so, your viewers will be shown the audio conferencing information when they connect. They simply need to dial the number that are shown to them and enter the 7-digit access code followed by the # button.

We currently have dial-in numbers for 33 countries. Please beware that the dial-in numbers are not toll-free so there may be long distance charges associated with calling the number that will be reflected in your telephone bill.

Finally, while the audio conferencing feature is in beta, we’ll be offering it for free to all users. Eventually, it will only be available on one of the pay plans.

Happy New Year Screenleapers!

Thank you for making last year such an amazing one. We started Screenleap in October of 2011 with a mission: make it as easy to share your screen with someone online as it is for the person to walk over to your computer. With your feedback and support, we made a lot of progress towards that goal last year. Below is a quick recap of the features we launched in 2012 and what you can expect from Screenleap in 2013.

January
We launched a screen sharing tool that allows your viewers to view your screen from any device with a web browser—without installing any additional software.

April
We added the ability to share your screen with your viewers by directing them to a personalized user handle (i.e., http://www.screenleap.com/your_handle). If you don’t have one already, please sign up to claim your free user handle and see how fast and easy it is to share your screen this way.

June
We made it even easier to share your screen with the people you collaborate with the most frequently using the Friends List.

July
We launched a Gmail browser extension that allows you to share your screen instantly from within Gmail.

September
We launched a screen share API that allows developers to easily add screen sharing to their own applications.

December
We launched Pro Accounts that provide dedicated servers for faster screen sharing.

The Road Ahead

Looking ahead to 2013, we have a number of features in the works that we will be announcing very soon on this blog. Some of the features that you can look forward to in 2013 include:

Screen Capture Tool (a.k.a. Screenshots)
We know that screen sharing is not always the best way to show someone the contents of your screen and to get feedback. Later this month, we will be launching a screen capture tool called Screenshots that will allow you to easily take screenshots, mark them up, share them with people, and allow them to give you feedback on their own time.

Audio Conferencing
This is one of the most frequently requested features by our users. We will launch a test version of it this month for you to use.

In-Browser Sharing
Our installation-free viewer makes it super-easy for people to view your shared screen—all they need to do is click on a link you send them or type in a share code at the Screenleap website. But we want to make it even easier for people to start sharing their screen. We will be launching a browser plugin soon that will allow you to share your browser window without having to install any additional third-party software—just click a button on your browser to start sharing your screen.

Customer Support Product
The In-Browser Sharing tool will be extremely useful for web-based customer support. Users can share their screens with customer support representatives in seconds with just a couple of clicks without having to leave the page that they are on. We are currently launching our pilot for this feature. Please contact us at support if you would like to participate.
